Culture Shock and Re-Inventing the future of Art

Empowering the Singaporean art community

THE CHALLENGE

Along with the tourism industry, cultural and creative sector is among the most affected by the current crisis in terms of both jobs and creation of meaning and to make sense of the world around us. Venue-based activities and the related supply chains are the most affected, and electronic devices connected to our bodies and brains providing truly immersive artistic experiences… have yet to arrive.

“So how can you leverage technology to support the creative industry? “ That was the question from NAC - National Art Council of Singapore, to its most motivated inhabitant.

THE OUTCOME

THE STORY

What if Singapore was not only a smart Nation - where technology and data are used to optimise resources such as water consumption, light, movements - but rather a Thriving Nation, where technology and data are used to support the imagination, the wellbeing, and the human connection amongst its inhabitant.

What if despite the alarming shrinking of the performing and live art scene, we can find a way to connect and engage the audience with the more creative side of Singapore. ?

Together with our partner CreativeatWorks and Supported by the National Art Council of Singapore, Gush innovative and sustainable paint and Kiasu parents, we envision, design, build and activate a 3D immersive art journey, to celebrate a Thriving Singapore, at the prisme of three pillars

  1. Its historical evolution towards technology

  2. Its creative community

  3. Its human connection

This ground-up initiative brought together 14 local artists and practitioners (visual artists, musicians, dancers, and meditation teacher) to showcase their works, and bring the community on a journey to explore Singapore local creativity and culture.

More than 30 original artworks – digital art, digitised paintings, photography, dance choreography - created by the artists were showcased in the virtual exhibition space.

Participants, families, friends were invited to experience and upgrade their creative skills with a series of creative workshops, fireside chats, as well as virtual tours conducted together with the artists and other industry experts.

The opening was held on 10th October 2020 where the artists and invited guests will be sharing on what “Thriving Singapore” means to the community. Ms Low Yen Ling, Minister of State for the Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry for Trade and Industry, was the Guest-of-Honour.

We particularly enjoyed the co-creation component during which a crowdsourcing campaign collected images from the Singapore inhabitants about what a Thriving Singapore meant to them, pictures later provided to pairs of artists, especially collaborating to create exclusive art pieces inspired by the community images.

These pieces are the one you can see in the main lobby of the exhibition.

The good news? Our creative platform will be used to virtually showcase Female artists in the Uk, during International Women Day in March 2021! Stay tuned!
